South Woods State Prison Release Paths
South Woods State Prison is operated by the New Jersey Department of Corrections in Bridgeton. It is not the Cumberland County Jail. A person leaving South Woods can reach maximum discharge, be released on parole, enter an NJDOC Residential Community Release Program, transfer to another state institution, or move to another lawful custodian. Only some of those events are final discharge into the community without continuing correctional supervision.
Parole means confinement in the prison has ended while New Jersey State Parole Board jurisdiction continues. A move to Kintock Bridgeton or another RCRP can place a person in a less restrictive, community-based setting while the correctional sentence remains active. An interfacility transfer changes the current location but is not a release. The NJDOC incarceration history must be followed to its most recent entry before drawing a conclusion.
Confirm a South Woods Prison Release
The official NJDOC offender search is the public starting point. Search by a sufficiently specific name and use the SBI number when known. Confirm identity with aliases, county of commitment, case or offense information, and the record’s other identifiers. A name alone can produce the wrong person, especially when the record has an alias or a common spelling.
- Open the official NJDOC search. Do not substitute the county jail tool or an unsourced aggregator.
- Confirm the person. Match the SBI number when available and reconcile name, aliases, commitment county, and case facts.
- Read current facility. South Woods may be a past location even when it appears in the history.
- Find Date Out-of-Custody. Read it within the most recent incarceration and check for any later admission.
- Separate calculated dates. Current Max Release Date and Current Parole Eligibility Date do not prove that release occurred.
- Check parole if indicated. Ask the State Parole Board to confirm present supervision because no public person-level supervision lookup was found.

South Woods Parole Versus Discharge
A South Woods prison release on parole ends confinement at the institution but begins or continues State Parole Board supervision. The NJDOC maximum term can span both NJDOC and SPB jurisdiction. Some sentences can also carry a supervision period after prison release. For that reason, “out of South Woods” and “fully discharged from correctional jurisdiction” are not interchangeable.
The State Parole Board’s weekly Parole Eligibility Notice can include historical event strings such as RELEASED, REVOKED, and RET CUSTODY. It is organized by county of commitment, not by the physical county of a prison. Someone held at South Woods may therefore appear under a different commitment county, while a Cumberland County block can contain a person held elsewhere. Geography alone does not settle identity or present status.
If current supervision is the issue, use the SPB contact page and its Public Information Office. Provide enough identifiers to avoid a mistaken match. A later revocation or return can produce a valid historical release date followed by new custody, so the most recent event controls the present-status conclusion.

When the public screen does not resolve the sequence, a state records request should identify the person by SBI number if known and ask for discharge or inmate-history material tied to the relevant custody episode. Ask SPB for a specific decision or supervision-status record when that agency’s event is the missing link. Protected material may be withheld or redacted.
South Woods RCRP Transfers
NJDOC lists Kintock Bridgeton programs among its Residential Community Release Programs. A transition from South Woods into one of those programs is a movement within the correctional continuum, even though the new setting is community based and may be less restrictive. It is not, by itself, proof of maximum discharge or unconditional release.
Read the NJDOC history for the new location and then look for the later out-of-custody event. If parole follows, SPB becomes part of the status chain. This distinction matters in Cumberland County because South Woods and the Bridgeton RCRPs are geographically close. Physical proximity does not turn a state correctional placement into a county-jail release or a completed sentence.

South Woods and Cumberland Prison History
Cumberland County’s state-prison footprint includes South Woods, Bayside, and the former Southern State Correctional Facility. NJDOC reports that Southern State fully closed on July 1, 2022 and that consolidation absorbed its population through the nearby system. A facility record ending around that closure can therefore reflect an administrative transfer, not release to the community.

The listing reinforces that these facilities share a state records system even though their custody levels and roles differ. NJDOC history, not the county jail roster, follows a person across them.
Cumberland County also announced a regional correctional agreement in 2025 after an earlier jail-build effort had been abandoned. That county project is separate from South Woods and should not be treated as an NJDOC release source. Together, the histories show why “left this building” is not enough. The next agency, next facility, and next status must all be identified.
Limits of South Woods Release Searches
No official public-retention promise was found for every fully discharged NJDOC record. A no-result can arise from spelling, identifier choice, technical trouble, system scope, or record availability. It cannot safely be translated into a release. Search with the SBI number when possible, try documented aliases, and use state records channels if the public result remains incomplete.

NJDOC can include some state-sentenced people who are temporarily held in a county setting, but it does not replace Cumberland County’s release sheet for an ordinary pretrial bail event or short local hold. The governing sentence and custodian determine the correct record family, not the fact that both facilities are in Bridgeton.
